On the Issues
Colorado needs help.
Still fighting for Democracy
Robert A. Dimick, Jr.
We have approximately 1,000 homeless Veterans in Colorado. That may not sound like a lot, but to put this number in perspective, the entire country of Australia has about 5,000 homeless Veterans. On top of this, many Veterans also have a hard time maintaining jobs, depending on their mental health. PTSD is something that a large number of Veterans struggle with every day. Some can’t handle being in public all day long. Major companies don't - or won't - understand the struggles Veterans deal with every day. I'd like to work with local companies to implement training, to better understand Veterans and how to work with them. I used to work in a gas station where I would be alone on my shift for 8 hours a day, helping customers. As a Veteran with severe PTSD, it was hard to be in some situations with no help. In a job like that, you can't just call in and say you're having a rough day, mentally. Employers don't care. I do, and I want to find a way to make them care. We need to be better for the people that were prepared to give the ultimate sacrifice for their country. I will do everything I can to find Veterans jobs and housing, as well as other ways to contribute to their overall well being. Veterans are heroes. They have defended our country, and stood in the way of those who would destroy our way of life.
This is a subject very close to me. I absolutely love being outside. And in southern Colorado, being outside is breathtaking. Summers here are very hazy, though. That's because of the smoke from the fires around us. I've been working on a concept for a couple years on a way to put out fires in the wild. When in office, even if my idea doesn't work, I will still work on ways to make sure fires are put out faster, and maybe make them a little more containable. If the fires reach the Valley, the results would be disastrous. The agriculture here needs to be protected and preserved and I'm ready to do whatever it takes to make that happen.
It has become a cliché but the fact is, the children are our future. We need to increase funding for public education and increase teacher's pay. We cannot expect people to teach if we pay them the bare minimum. We need to get rid of standardized testing and start teaching practical skills for life. Start teaching foreign language at a younger age as opposed to waiting until high school. We need to ensure the future of our country flourishes. We need to maintain funding for sports, art and music programs as well as before and after school programs. We need to find a way for parents who work from 8-5 know their children are in capable hands and not out getting in trouble.
Small Business Recovery
In the past year, we have seen a lot of family owned businesses being sold. We need better legislation to help struggling small businesses. Keeping the “Mom and Pop” shops open is important because it's part of the American dream. It is my goal to help them keep it.
Despite living in the 21st century, we still treat women as less than equal. I've heard so many times "Let me ask my wife" and "Women run the house". Women deserve equal pay, equal rights and to be treated as equals. It is time to raise women up and stop belittling them. There are politicians that think they have the right to tell a woman what to do with her body. Politicians should provide protections, not restrictions. I support women making choices for their own body. No one knows your body like you do and no one but you should be in charge of your body and your well being.
Rural hospitals are the backbones of our communities. With significant farm land in our district, injuries can be severe, and even life-threatening. There are challenges for the rural health care system that are different for the major cities. It also takes a lot longer to get to a hospital, so we need to make sure they have the funding needed, if and when severe issues arise. Low patient volume, higher drug costs and over-reliance on government payers are a big problem. In addition to pushing for free health care, I'm also going to push for dental coverage and mental health care to be provided free of charge.
